5 Psalms to Pray and Declare in Times of Trouble

When life feels overwhelming—whether it's during an election season, in times of personal trials, illness, or when you see those you love suffer—the Psalms provide a lifeline. When the walls close in and you feel powerless, the Psalms remind us that God is our refuge, strength, and deliverer. They were written by people who faced enormous struggles yet still chose to put their trust in God.

For thousands of years, Jewish believers have turned to the Psalms as powerful prayers during both personal and communal worship. In Jewish tradition, Psalms are recited not only in moments of joy and celebration but also during times of great difficulty. For instance, Psalm 46 has historically been used in times of war or crisis to invoke God’s protection over His people. Similarly, Psalm 91, often called the "Soldier’s Psalm," has been prayed as a prayer of safety for those going into battle. Many Jewish people also recite it for protection when traveling or during times of sickness.

Jewish daily prayers incorporate the Tehillim (Psalms) to connect with God’s promises. Specific Psalms, such as Psalm 27 and Psalm 62, are woven into high holy days, while others are recited individually to seek God's help and comfort. This deep-rooted tradition reflects a strong belief in God's faithfulness, making the Psalms a cherished part of Jewish worship for millennia.

As we read and pray these Psalms, remember there is incredible power in speaking them aloud. When we declare God’s Word audibly, it engages our hearts and minds, allowing truth to take root deeply. It also aligns our words with God’s promises, shifting our perspective, driving away fear, and inviting His presence into our situations. Scripture reminds us of the importance of spoken words:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits” (Proverbs 18:21).

By praying the Psalms out loud, we activate God’s Word, speaking life over our circumstances and wielding it as a weapon against fear and discouragement.
